 BREATHE

AN NMC PROGRAMME

A restorative programme for medical professionals seeking clarity, balance and purpose in one of the world’s most peaceful settings.

About the programme

Step back from intensity without stepping back from medicine

BREATHE is designed for qualified medical professionals who need a temporary pause from demanding clinical environments, while remaining professionally active and purposeful. Set within the peaceful island nation of Nauru, the programme offers a short-term placement at Nauru Medical Centre that combines meaningful service with restorative living.

Participants contribute directly to patient care alongside resident clinicians, in a close-knit national healthcare setting where clinical responsibility is sustainable, collaboration is direct, and every action has visible impact.

Clinical contribution

Practise meaningfully alongside local clinicians, supporting care across departments matched to your expertise.

Restored pace

Medicine practised deliberately, not reactively. Sustained by sunlight, ocean air and the calm of island life.

Visible impact

In a nation of 12,000, your contribution shapes care pathways and builds capacity that lasts for decades.

Note: At the present moment, our primary focus is on prioritising emergency medicine specialists for the programme, ensuring that critical situations are addressed promptly and effectively by highly trained professionals.

Nauru Living

Life beyond the Clinic

Nauru is one of the world’s smallest sovereign nations – a peaceful island with very low crime, a strong social fabric and an unhurried pace of daily life. Surrounded by open horizons and the Pacific Ocean, it offers an environment where professional responsibility coexists with genuine calm.

Beyond clinical duties, life slips easily into clear Pacific swims and walks along quiet coastal roads, where you’re not a visitor, but part of the island’s rhythm

Community is central to life here. Water activities, coastal walks, shared meals and local gatherings form the texture of everyday life. With a population of approximately 12,000 people across the entire nation, the atmosphere is personal and the simplicity creates space for rest, reflection and reconnection.

Your impact

Small setting, lasting change

Nauru is at a turning point. Once one of the wealthiest nations per capita, it is now in a period of steady rebuilding and strengthening healthcare is central to its future. In a nation this size, even modest improvements in clinical governance, mentorship or patient pathways can affect a significant proportion of the population.

Mentoring one nurse or junior clinician may shape practice for decades. Introducing improvements in triage systems or chronic disease management creates change that is human, visible and lasting. Your contribution will not dissolve within a large system, it will directly influence how healthcare evolves in one of the world’s smallest sovereign states.
