and Responsibilities

Patient Rights

Every patient receiving care or services at the NMC has the following rights:

  1. Respectful and Non-Discriminatory Care
    Receive care that is respectful, equitable, and free from discrimination. Patients are entitled to dignity, privacy, and respect for their cultural background, spiritual beliefs, gender identity, sexual orientation, and personal values.

  2. Safe, Secure, and Supportive Care Environment
    Receive care in a safe, secure and supportive environment that promotes physical safety, emotional well-being, and personal dignity.

  3. Qualified and Identified Healthcare Providers
    Receive care from properly licensed and credentialed healthcare professionals. Patients have the right to know the name, role, and professional designation of individuals involved in their care.

  4. Information and Effective Communication
    Receive clear, accurate, and understandable information regarding diagnosis, condition, proposed treatments or procedures, risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected outcomes. Communication will be provided in a manner appropriate to the patient’s needs, level of understanding, and communication abilities.

  5. Participation in Care and Treatment Decisions
    Participate actively in decisions regarding care and treatment, including the right to ask questions, express preferences, and involve family members or legally authorized representatives, when desired or appropriate.

  6. Informed Consent and Right to Refuse Treatment
    Provide informed consent prior to treatment or procedures and accept or refuse care after receiving adequate information about potential medical consequences, except in emergency situations or as otherwise permitted by law.

  7. Privacy and Confidentiality
    Have personal health information, medical records, and private communications kept confidential and protected, with access limited to individuals directly involved in the patient’s care or as otherwise required by law.

  8. Access to Medical Records
    Request and obtain access to medical records, test results, and discharge information within a reasonable timeframe and in accordance with hospital policy and applicable legal requirements.

  9. Pain Assessment and Medically Necessary Care
    Receive appropriate assessment and management of pain and access to medically necessary care based on identified clinical needs, regardless of financial or administrative considerations.

  10. Complaints, Concerns, and Grievances
    Express concerns, submit complaints, or provide feedback regarding care or services and receive a response without fear of retaliation.

Patient Responsibilities

To support safe, effective, and respectful care, patients and their families are encouraged to:

  1. Provide Accurate and Complete Information
    Provide truthful, complete, and timely information about medical history, current symptoms, medications, allergies, and changes in condition.

  2. Participate in Care and Communication
    Ask questions when information is unclear, share concerns or preferences, and participate in care planning and decision-making to the extent possible.

  3. Follow the Plan of Care
    Follow the agreed-upon treatment plan and clinical instructions or inform the healthcare team if unable or unwilling to comply, understanding the potential impact on health outcomes.

  4. Demonstrate Respectful Conduct
    Treat healthcare personnel, other patients, and visitors with dignity, courtesy, and respect, and refrain from abusive, threatening, or disruptive behavior.

  5. Respect the Rights and Privacy of Others
    Respect the privacy, confidentiality, and dignity of other patients, families, and hospital personnel.

  6. Comply with Hospital Policies and Safety Measures
    Follow hospital rules, infection prevention measures, security procedures, and safety instructions designed to protect patients, staff, and visitors.

  7. Support Continuity of Care and Discharge Planning
    Attend scheduled appointments, when possible, notify the hospital of appointment changes, and cooperate with administrative and clinical processes necessary for continuity of care.
