The achievements of GMSS and Nauru Medical Centre have been recognised by the Government of Nauru in a recent ministerial statement, which highlights significant progress across the country’s healthcare system.

A recent ministerial statement delivered by His Excellency David W. R. Adeang highlighted the significant progress made in Nauru’s healthcare system since the appointment of GMSS, the organization supporting operations at Nauru Medical Centre.

The statement reported that over the past eight months, more than 300 surgeries have been performed on the island, including the introduction of laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery, now conducted weekly. This development has strengthened local capability and reduced reliance on overseas referrals.

His Excellency also spoke about how specialist services have expanded, with over 100 eye procedures completed and ongoing weekly Avastin treatments contributing to the near elimination of preventable blindness in Nauru.
Workforce capacity has also improved significantly. Nauru now has approximately 40 doctors, achieving a doctor-to-population ratio comparable to the United Kingdom and New Zealand, supported by more than 120 nursing staff.
The statement further highlighted increased efficiency in healthcare delivery, with total expenditure over the past nine months reduced to approximately AUD 3 million, compared to AUD 36 million in the previous year, alongside improved outcomes.

Child health indicators have shown notable progress, with only one under-5 death recorded in the past nine months, exceeding national and international targets. Infrastructure development continues to support these advancements, including the opening of a new dental clinic at Nauru Medical Centre on 25 March.
His Excellency noted that these achievements have also received international recognition. During a recent visit, the Regional Director of the World Health Organization remarked that Nauru’s progress could serve as a model for the wider Pacific region.

Overall, the progress reflects coordinated efforts between government, GMSS, and healthcare teams, contributing to a more resilient and self-sufficient health system.
