Recognizing early signs can save lives. Our nursing team recently participated in a focused training session on Early Warning Score (EWS) skills. The session was designed to help identify patient risk, escalate care promptly, and act with confidence when it matters most. The session was led by Ms Karin Prinsloo, Chief Nursing Officer, reinforcing the critical role of early detection in preventing deterioration.
Early Warning Score (EWS) is a systematic assessment of physiological parameters including heart rate, respiratory rate, systolic blood pressure, oxygen saturation, supplemental oxygen, temperature and level of consciousness, meant to identify early signs of patient deterioration.
This skill would help staff improve the quality of health we provide in Nauru. By detecting early signs of patient deterioration and aggregating vital sign measurements into a score would enable us to intervene typically 6–8 hours earlier before a serious event. This is crucial because it allows for early intervention, improves patient outcomes, and helps manage, or prevent, serious adverse events.
