A remarkable story of survival, resilience, and compassionate care

After surviving 120 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean, Indonesian fisherman Macbul Budiman was rescued in Nauru and received comprehensive care and family reunification support from NMC.

After surviving an extraordinary 120 days adrift at sea, Indonesian fisherman Macbul Budiman has been reunited with his family thanks to the coordinated efforts of NMC’s clinical teams, support staff, and international partners. His remarkable journey from the open Pacific Ocean to recovery in Nauru is a story of resilience, survival, and compassionate care.

Macbul Budiman, known as Mat, a fisherman from North Minahasa, Indonesia, was reported missing after losing direction while working on his traditional floating fishing platform in the waters near Biak, Papua, on 25 February 2026.

What followed was an incredible test of endurance.

Surviving Against the Odds
Carried away by ocean currents and unable to navigate back to shore, Mat found himself alone in the open sea with only limited food supplies. His provisions lasted approximately 45 days.

As his supplies dwindled, he relied on his fishing skills and resourcefulness to survive. He continued catching fish, grilling them for food, and collecting rainwater to drink. For four months, he faced the challenges of isolation, uncertainty, and the harsh realities of life at sea.

After drifting thousands of kilometres across the Pacific Ocean, Mat eventually reached the waters of Nauru, where he was rescued and brought to safety after spending 120 days lost at sea.

Receiving Care at NMC

Following his rescue and arrival in Nauru, Mat was admitted to NMC, where a multidisciplinary team immediately began assessing his physical and psychological wellbeing.

The hospital provided comprehensive clinical care to support his recovery after months at sea. Recognising the emotional impact of his experience, NMC also arranged psychological support to help him process the trauma of prolonged isolation and uncertainty.

Beyond medical treatment, the team worked to reconnect Mat with his loved ones.

Rebuilding Lost Connections

NMC coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy and relevant authorities to establish communication with Mat’s family, who had been without contact for more than four months.

The efforts resulted in the restoration of communication between Mat and his family, bringing relief and reassurance after months of uncertainty. The Indonesian Ambassador also played a key role in supporting the reunification process and ensuring appropriate assistance for the patient.

The case demonstrated the importance of collaboration between healthcare providers, diplomatic representatives, and family support networks in caring for patients far from home.

More Than a Survival Story

While Mat’s journey is a remarkable story of endurance and resilience, it is also a reminder of the human side of healthcare.

At NMC, care extends beyond clinical treatment. Supporting emotional wellbeing, facilitating communication with loved ones, and helping patients navigate challenging circumstances are all part of NMC’s commitment to patient-centred care.

As Mat continues his recovery and prepares for his journey home, his story stands as an inspiring example of human resilience and the impact of compassionate care.
